What is Probus?
The Probus Centre - South Pacific Inc., is dedicated to promoting the development of friendship and acquaintance and the advancement of intellectual interests of its membership throughout Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands.
Probus originated in the UK in 1965. the first Probus Clubs were formed in New Zealand in 1974, and in Australia in 1976. Probus has filled a need for today's active retirees, so much so that the growth has been phenomenal. It is now a world-wide movement.
Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired people who join together in clubs, the basic purpose of which is to provide regular opportunities for them to keep their minds active, expand their interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends.
Yes, it was a lady who added the notion that the needs of all people who were in retired families and not just male Rotarians could be met by a new community based club. So it was in England in 1965 and 1966 that PROBUS was conceived independently by two Rotary clubs. This new concept for retirees offered social contacts and no service constraints, using the name PROBUS from the words – professional and business. One club began with the name, ‘Campus Club’ but readily changed when the two groups realized they were offering a similar activity.
In very little time, through the wide network of the clubs of Rotary International, PROBUS spread through Great Britain and even across the English Channel to Europe.
It is true that Rotary began in the United States, however many of its programs have been started by individual members with ideas in other parts of the world. Rotary’s “Group Study Exchange” for young professionals and business people had its origins in New Zealand. The “Rotary Youth Leadership Awards” (dynamic leadership training for young adults) began in Queensland, Australia. The idea of a balanced Rotary program (Four Avenues of Service) began in England during a country walk by two local Rotarians.
In effect, the Rotary Club of Dumbarton, Scotland can lay claim to being the catalyst for, firstly PROBUS in New Zealand (Paraparaumu, 1974) and then Australia (Hunter’s Hill, NSW 1976).
PROBUS remains in Australia and New Zealand as the largest and most active Community Service project of Rotary. The solid links between PROBUS and Rotary remain invaluable. |

Clubs - Senior Citizens Category
From The Beginning
Probus Clubs are established at the initiative of the local Rotary Clubs. In our case, the Rotary Club of Tea Tree Gully arranged an expression of interest meeting, held at the Modbury Hotel (now the Modbury Plaza Hotel) on 5th December 1983. Nine local gentlemen accepted the invitation and promptly formed the Probus Club of Tea Tree Gully. ("Inc" was added upon Incorporation in August 1984, at a fee of $34.00).
Tea Tree Gully Rotarians, Lindsay Gibb and Brian Houlson, President, supported by the Mayor John Tilley, explained what Probus was about.
The Foundation Office Bearers were – Bill Sanders, President and Bulletin Editor; Lance James the Vice President ; Cec Smith, Secretary/Treasurer : Bob Kelton, Activities Officer ; Maurice Alliston, Programs Officer ; Ron Mather, Membership Officer. In 1984 Merv Jordan took over as Treasurer, with Kelvin Trebilcock as the first Auditor.
Our Probus Club was the first in the North Eastern foothill suburbs. Membership grew steadily to fifty after only one year. Earlier, members had been urged to interest their friends into joining. They did that job so well that the stage was quickly reached when consideration had to be given to placing an upper limit on membership. Sixty-five, and later, in September 1987, seventy-five was decided on, a figure that still applies.
Card Evenings
A suggestion was made for the establishment of a social card playing group at the general meeting in July 1989. At the request of the Management Committee, Ivan Whalley undertook the necessary organisation, with meetings held on a rotational basis in participating members homes. This card session remains to this day, but is now on a Saturday afternoon, once a month.
Other activities
Over the years there have been other club activities that have fallen by the wayside, and some of these include Caravan Club, Probuskers ( singing group), Organ Lovers Group, and a Finance and Investment group. Did it close because of poor management??? Lawn bowls has also been enjoyed by the bowling members
The 1991 Rendezvous
Not even the sketchiest record of our Clubs development could omit reference to the first Probus International Rendezvous, held at Tanunda in April 1991. It was our finest hour (to borrow Churchill’s phrase) with the inspiration, drive and skill of a number of TTG members ensuring success.
Tea Tree Gully provided the Chairman – Harry Drury, Vice Chairman – Don Evans, Secretary Lance James, Treasurer – Nev Butler, and Minute Secretary – Ralph Thornthwaite.
Formal moves to go ahead with the rendezvous began with Harry Drury’s successful motion to the Probus 950 annual Seminar in August 1988: "That South Australia host a national Probus Convention in 1989 or subsequently". A further motion, carried unanimously, voted " that a committee is formed to investigate the possibility of conducting a national convention in 1991".
The Rendezvous was held in the Barrossa Valley and approx. 1400 members of Probus from around Australia and New Zealand attended the event.
The dinners, tours, together with a church service which was watched from inside the church, and outside on a large screen was enjoyed by all who participated.
The Rendezvous was taken over by Probus South Pacific, and has been held in many centres since the inception.
25th Anniversary
On the 16th January 2009, a 25 year celebration was held at the Payneham Bowling Club, and was attended by aproximately 80 members and guests from Probus South Pacific, and Rotary Clubs. The future of the club looks real bright, and friendly.
