The Golden Grove Tennis Club was first formed around 1900. Social tennis matches were played against other nearby clubs, including Houghton on a clay surface court near the Golden Grove township. It was not until after World War 1 in 1919 that tennis resumed, on two clay courts, near the same location. They were prepared by the members, who leveled the natural white clay of the area to make a reasonable playing surface. Matches were played as far away as Virginia, Alberton and Victoria Park Racecourse.
In 1946, the GGTC moved to its present site at the Golden Grove Oval. Land was donated by Mrs. Hanna Tilley and local farmers and friends gave many hours of hard work, using their tractors to help level out the present four courts. Tons of clay were removed from the side of a low hill before a suitable site was excavated. At first, only two courts were surfaced with bitumen, with the other two finished some time later. Mrs Dorothy Tilley, who later became a Life Member, donated the Back stops for the last two courts. The Club has grown significantly, particularly since the Golden Grove development saw a large increase in population in the area.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT / TENNIS SA AWARDS
In 2002, the GGTC won 2 Tennis SA Awards, the "2002, Metropolitan Club of the Year" and the " 2002 Best Open Day" Award. A very successful Promotional and Membership drive was held at the Village Shopping Centre, Golden Grove. Graham Bassham, for his work on the committee over the 10 years and his GGTC Life Membership, and Kieron Keong for his involvement and organizing of the Junior Competition Tennis, were recognized in the Senior Volunteer Awards.
In 2003, the GGTC won the Tennis SA "2003, Metropolitan Club of the Year" Award for the second successive year, having already won it in 2002. The then Vice President, Anthony Heinrich, gratefully accepted the Award and said " This is an outstanding achievement for the Club. I would especially like to thank all of our Committee Members for their efforts over the last few years".
In 2005, Craig Mousely, our Club Coach, won the Tennis SA " Professional Coach of the Year" Award. Craig has developed an outstanding Tennis Coaching career at the GGTC and has helped develop many of the state's top Juniors players. He has a major and influential role in developing and building our Ladies Pennant team.
GGTC is in continual negotiations with the TTG Council and the Tilley Recreation Park Committee to upgrade the current facilities. As one of the largest Clubs in Adelaide's North East we are outgrowing our current location, hiring extra courts each season.
