Mulgundawa Salt
The Mulgundawa Salt field was established in the late 1800’s and has been owned by many different entities including a fireworks company, dried fruit producer, stock feed supplement business, and a fertiliser company.
The current owners purchased the company in 1995. At that stage the company had only one small refinery and which kept production down to 800 ton per annum. With the introduction of new plant and more efficient harvesting methods Mulgundawa Salt has increased production to a rate of approximately 25,000 ton per annum which is steadily increasing.
Ninety per cent of their custom is from interstate, with most of the salt used industrially, including as a preserve for sheep skins and hides, as a supplement in livestock feed, and in the textile industry. In addition they produce a dust suppressant (a by-product of salt) which consists of magnesium chloride, which is naturally occurring in groundwater. The company is aiming to expand into the food grade market.
