Mulgundawa Salt

Mulgundawa Salt is Australia's oldest salt business with salt production on the Mulgundawa site dating back to the 1870’s. The business operates from a base near Langhorne Creek in South Australia on the shores of Lake Alexandrina near the Murray mouth.

Salt is produced by solar evaporation utilising underground brines. The business then value adds by producing a range of packaged manufactured salt products that are sold into the hide and skin, stockfeed, chemical, pool and industrial sectors. All Mulgundawa Salt products are washed or refined with specifications to meet customer needs in a range of markets and applications. Mulgundawa Salt offers a range of palletised packaged salt products and sells products by the pallet or by the truckload. Individual bag sizes per pallet range from 20kg bags to 1.2tonne bulker bags.

The salt refining process involves washing, kiln drying, crushing and screening. The business also specialises in the manufacture of a range of refined products with additives for the hide and skin industry.

Mulgundawa Salt is one of the few companies actively removing significant quantities of salt from the Murray Darling Basin. The company’s operations provide a positive benefit to the environment by employing responsible environmental land management practices and utilising a salt resource that would otherwise exacerbate local dryland salinity. The business reduces the impact of saline groundwater on regional agricultural farmland and importantly, reduces the salt load on Lake Alexandrina.

The business is privately owned, has around 18 employees and supplies salt into domestic markets in South Eastern Australia. The majority of product sales are into South Australia, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania for the curing of sheep skins which in turn are largely exported to China. The business supplies washed pool salt grades to retailers for use by customers in swimming pools, it supplies stockfeed salt products for the agri-feed sector and supplies a range of other salt products used in various industrial applications.
